Rebelman Race Report: Kick off of the 2010 season!

March 28, 2010, Oxford, MS
Rebelman Sprint: 400, 13.1, 3.1

The kick off race for my season was Rebelman, a (shoddily put together) sprint on the campus of Ole Miss... Having spent a lot of time there during my years in MS, I figured this would be an easy race to start with on a great campus.... And I was right...

S: 7:50 (400 m pool swim)

T1: 2:11 (includes a run from the pool to T1-was 2nd in age group for T1--Kendrick posted a 1:48 T1, J a 1:44, and Chad a 1:47, so I felt a 2:11 was respectable)

B: 40:46, avg. 19.3 (rolling hills, course not shut down for traffic, made ride interesting)

T2: 1:08 (was 5th in AG for T2)

R: 28:55, avg. 9:20 (decent 5k time, PR off the bike)

Tot: 1:20:48

These times, by most people's comparison, are not fast... But for me, they're lightning quick

Before the season started, I made improving my transition times a priority... As Kendrick says, transitions are "free speed involving zero fitness"... So I gotta make up for the areas in which I lack (fitness), so cutting T times seemed like a natural move...

A few weeks before the race, I taught myself flying mounts (only bit it once, had the cuts and bruises to prove it), which saved me a heap of time on T1... The "rolling dismounts" also saved me a ton of time coming into T2... And like always, the run slowed my entire race down... Not that I'm not happy with my time, but I felt like I could have done better on the run...

I guess the highlight of the race was meeting the guy that I'm going to chase all season... His name is Ryan, but we called him "Calve Sleeves" for his use of (in my opinion) these utterly useless pieces of equipment (show me some data that proves they're legit and I'll change my mind)... CS beat me by 5 minutes, which to me, is actually encouraging.... This dude is pretty in shape, but races in the Clydesdale division (didn't have one at Rebelman), which means if we're at the same races together, we'll race in the same division... He seems like a nice dude, but a little too into the gadgets and whatnot... The night before the race, there was a social event for the racers that me, Kendrick, and Chad went to... we saw CS there and struck up a conversation, in which he proceeded to make all of us laugh (not in a good way)... there were several times where Chad and I had to literally bite our cheeks to keep from laughing at Kendrick's antagonizing... Regardless, I have now found the Drago to my Rocky...

Kendrick took 2nd overall, and Chad and J both took home AG wins (20-24) and (25-29)

Then there was me, 14th out of 23 in my AG...

Overall, Rebelman was a good race for me... I swam the entire 400m, which was a goal, and feel like I did well on cutting my transition times...

Won't be racing until the semester is done :(

Next race will hopefully be King of the Hill in Tupelo, MS on May 1st, followed by Memphis in May on May 23rd...
